During the first day of the European Water Technology Week, the annual Marcel Mulder Award was presented to Nouran Bahgat. She is associated with Delft University and works within the Phosphate Recovery theme at Wetsus, on Water Mining. Marcel Mulder was the professor who planted the seed for Wetsus. Sadly, before he was able to see the development of Wetsus, he passed away in 2002. In memory of him, and to extend his ideas, the annual Professor Marcel Mulder Award is granted to the Wetsus researcher who made the most exceptional performance in the field of water technology in the past year. That means that the winner enabled a technological process to importantly move forward, preferably also leading to a patent. The research subject must be connected to one of the themes of the Wetsus program. The prize is financially supported by Vitens, the Province of Friesland, Patent office Arnold and Sytsma, the North Netherlands Watercycle Authorities and Wetsus.
This year, there was also a special prize, This special prize is for outstanding high impact science and supervision and was awarded to Karel Keesman. Professor Keesman is emeritus Professor “Systems Theory for Sustainability” at Wageningen University. He has been connected to Wetsus for over 15 years, bringing his never ending enthusiasm and expertise to the organization.
He has been instrumental to the success of many PhD’s. With his expertise and constructive guidance, he helped the researchers with the mathematics, data handling and model predictions.
