Project description:
Phosphorus (P) is a critical nutrient primarily derived from non-renewable phosphate rock, and its excessive release into the environment contributes to environmental problems such as eutrophication. Animal manure, particularly cow manure, represents the largest secondary source of phosphorus that can be sustainably recovered and reused. In the Netherlands alone, 74 million tons of animal manure are produced annually, with cow manure accounting for 83% of this amount. This project focuses on developing an innovative process to optimize the simultaneous recovery of calcium phosphate (CaP) and methane within a single bioreactor. The recovered CaP can be repurposed as fertilizer, supporting sustainable agriculture, while methane provides a renewable energy source.
Combining biotechnology, crystallization, and process engineering, this project explores factors like temperature and calcium-to-phosphorus ratio affecting CaP crystallization and methane production. Students will gain hands-on experience with advanced analytics, bioreactor operation, and sustainable agricultural innovations.
