BSc or MSc Thesis/internship
Starting date: preferably October 2024,
Duration: 6 months
Location: Wetsus, European centre of excellence for sustainable water technology, at Leeuwarden
There are a few possibilities for allowances:
– The allowance for students is €200. The student can apply for ‘Wetsus Grant’ allowance (€200 extra; an internal committee decides if the allowance will be granted).
– Students can apply for Erasmus; (if the Erasmus grant is less than €400, the student can apply for the Wetsus Grant).
– Erasmus
*The Wetsus Grant allowance is not guaranteed and must be approved by the Grant Committee.
Motivation
Biofilm formation in drinking water distribution (DWD) pipes is responsible for a wide range of water quality and operational problems. In the water industry, it has been frequently observed that magnetic fields, as a sustainable and additive-free technology, can greatly preserve drinking water quality and reduce the fouling tendency. However, despite the numerous field and laboratory observations, there is lack of solid explanation of the mechanism on how magnetic field can affect biofilm growth in DWD.
Recently, the effect of magnetic gradients on drinking water bacteria and microbial calcium carbonate precipitation processes are experimentally verified. It is suggested that specific enzymatic activities of bacteria are influenced by the magnetic fields. Therefore, the aim of this proposed master project is to investigate the effect of magnetic fields on enzymatic kinetics.
Research challenge
Pure culture bacteria isolated from drinking water will be used to assess the effect of magnetic fields on the enzymatic activity. Different molecular/biochemical method will be developed and applied to measure the reaction rate of amino acid metabolism under the influence of magnetic fields.
Requirements
We are looking for a candidate studying a BSc or MSc program in the field of microbiology, molecular biology or biochemistry. The project has a minimum duration of 6 month. Starting date is preferably in October 2024.
Due to the visa related issues, only 1) EU citizens enrolled in any university or 2) non-EU citizens already living in the Netherlands and enrolled in a Dutch university will be allowed to work as internship/thesis student.
Allowance
The internship includes a monthly allowance of 200 euro per month for the students without Erasmus scholarship. In addition, the student can apply for “Wetsus Grant” allowance ( 200 euros extra; an internal committee decides if the allowance will be granted). The Wetsus Grant allowance is not guaranteed and must be approved by the Grant Committee.
